Lightning damage to a small rod pump usually is not a major concern. Production rates are low and equipment is readily accessible. However, excessive motor winding burns and control device failures do get expensive. Sheriff offers a low-cost way to avoid these problems. Model 796GWY10 was designed for grounded Y 460 power to 796 VAC motors. It performs equally well for common (277 VAC phase-to-ground) 480 VAC motors. Typical oilfield operations will have one bank of transformers supplying power to quite a number of rod pumps. 480 VAC power is run on power poles to the various pumps. Sheriff TVSS installation is illustrated above. For best protection, the ground wire from the transformers and lightning arresters should be run directly to the nearest wellhead. |
