Tank Battery DAS®

Protection of tank batteries with lightning rods, overhead wires or early streamer emitters has never been more than marginally successful. All these devices bring the lightning bolt down through the battery to ground. However, tank batteries contain explosive gases and electrically charged fluids. Keeping the bolt from arcing over to some ungrounded metal or from puncturing a fiber glass tank with oppositely charged fluid is a nearly impossible task. As a result many tank batteries are destroyed each year.

A better solution is the Dissipative Array System (DAS) designed to prevent strikes to the battery. DAS is specially engineered to optimize the transfer of charge from the earth beneath and the charge inside so there is no buildup of lightning streamers or counter leaders. The result is no direct lightning strikes. This careful approach is based on studies done in Japan, Russia and at the USA based technology center of LEC, Inc. Each DAS is designed to be the most effective protection for each individual tank battery and comes with a “No Strike Warranty.”

DAS prevents lightning strikes to thousand of sites in over 60 countries, with a 99.87% success rate measured over 40,000 system years. Why take the chance of loosing a tank battery to lightning and loosing hundreds of thousands of dollars in production and replacement equipment? PM&D Engineering provides site surveys to initiate the design process, quotations for installation of DAS and coordination of the actual installation.
